DTH Hammer Selection:

When it comes to selecting a DTH hammer, the decision largely hinges on the drill machine being used (primarily its compressor output), as well as the size of the drilling hole and type of rock formation being encountered. It’s important for the hammer size to closely match the required hole dimension while still allowing enough space for compressed air to clear cuttings and clean the hole.

For blast-hole drilling using the DTH drilling method, the ideal range of hole sizes is between 90-254mm (3.5-10 inches) with hammers ranging from 3.5-8 inches. Smaller blast holes can be drilled using top-hammer rock drilling tools, while larger holes typically require rotary drilling tools. In other applications, such as foundation drilling, DTH hammers can be used for hole sizes up to 1,000mm ((39-3/8 inches).

Typically, the smallest hole diameter that a DTH hammer can drill is equal to its nominal size. For instance, a 4-inch hammer would be able to drill a 4-inch (100/102mm) hole. The limiting factor here is the outside diameter of the hammer, as airflow becomes restricted when the hole diameter decreases. For production drilling, the maximum hole size is determined by adding 1 inch for hammers that are 5 inches or smaller, and 2 inches for hammers that are 6 inches or larger. Therefore, a 4-inch hammer has a maximum hole size of 5 inches (127/130mm), whereas an 8-inch hammer has a maximum hole size of 10 inches (254mm).
