AutoDriller
The Pason Electronic AutoDriller is a precision drilling control system designed to reduce drilling costs by optimizing the rate of penetration (ROP) while extending drill bit life. It maintains a specified weight on bit (WOB) with high accuracy, continuously monitoring and adjusting the drawworks brake handle position using real‑time feedback from hook load, drilling fluid pressure, drum rotation, and a depth sensor. The system allows the driller to set a target WOB and optional “not to exceed” limits for fluid pressure and ROP. Weight is automatically added to the bit until the desired parameters are reached, ensuring consistent and stable drilling regardless of formation changes. The AutoDriller operates across all ROP ranges and is capable of very precise time‑drilling control. By maintaining consistent WOB and fluid pressure, it reduces stress on the drill string, mud motor, and bit, thereby improving equipment life and drilling efficiency. The system uses existing sensors from the Pason Electronic Data Recorder (EDR) and can be installed on almost any rig without modifications, utilizing the rig’s existing band brakes. It includes two emergency kill switches (rig floor and doghouse) and can be monitored and adjusted from the doghouse computer or an optional Pason SideKick on the rig floor.
