Organophilic clay is used in drilling fluid systems to improve their stability, preventing swelling and fracture of clay formations. Modified clay is a popular component in the preparation of water- and oil-based drilling fluids. Its addition makes the drilling fluid filtrate a virtually pure hydrocarbon medium.
