Automatic backup power supply (AVR)

Tasks to be solved:

• Providing power supply at 380 V from one of two or more independent sources (main and backup, etc.) or a diesel generator (DG);
• Power distribution and protection of process equipment from overloads and short circuits;
• Automatic switching of power supply to the backup input when the voltage at the main input disappears;
• Manual switching of power supply to DG;
• Protection of technological equipment from lightning discharges;
• Accounting for electricity consumption;
• Providing power supply during routine maintenance.

AVR: scope of application

ATS is an automatic reserve input device. It is used to restore power to consumers by connecting a reserve power source in automatic mode when the main power source stops working. In addition, ATS is necessary to restore the main power source during parallel restoration of the working source. ATS is most often used in industrial and transport enterprises to provide electricity at the proper level to consumers of the first two categories.

AVR shields: functions

ATS boards are, first of all, a reliable voltage control system, both in the backup and main power supply circuits, as well as the sequence of their phase alternation. ATS also ensures, by connecting a backup power supply in one second, the restoration of the power supply system (the same problem may arise during a temporary loss of voltage in the main source). ATS enables constant comparison of voltage indicators of two power sources with established minimum and maximum values (deviations are calculated). As soon as the main power source is restored, thanks to ATS, electrical installations acquire a pre-emergency character. ATS ensures visual control of possible phase voltage violations. After the operator gives a command to disconnect the main and backup power, ATS performs this task.

AVR: design

AVR boards are produced in two types: floor or wall-mounted. The choice of model depends mainly on the rated current. On the front side of the board there are control panels, voltage indicators, phasing, contactor inclusion.
