Description:
Low-speed motors have a frequency range of 100–1500 rpm. The maximum power of a single section is up to 80 kW. These motors are used for viscous oil and low-yield wells.
Overview:

The Novomet Group of Companies produces submersible valve electric motors (SVMs), which outperform their asynchronous counterparts in energy efficiency. Using these motors reduces the energy consumption of electric centrifugal pumps (ESPs) by up to 15%, and when combined with energy-efficient pumps, energy savings reach 25–30%.

Focus on production efficiency
Today, mechanized production using ESPs remains the most common method. Despite significant investment in exploration and drilling, improving the efficiency of production itself often receives insufficient attention. Novomet sees its mission as developing and implementing solutions that reduce operating costs at this stage.

Key Benefits

  • Reduced energy costs due to high efficiency (88–94% depending on size and power).
  • The ability to flexibly adjust the rotation speed allows for optimizing pump operation in a wide range of modes.
  • Smaller dimensions and metal consumption: with equal power, the section of a valve motor is half the length of an asynchronous motor.

Where are they applied?

  • ESP in wells of classical design.
  • Energy-efficient ESP units.
  • Compact systems for sidetracks (ColibriESP, SlimLineESP technology).
  • Installations of screw and positive displacement rotary pumps with bottom drive.
  • Rise of geothermal waters.

Additional features
Valve motors are effective where the use of asynchronous machines is difficult:

  • viscous oil;
  • unstable inflow (cyclic operation);
  • low-yield wells;
  • difficult conditions after hydraulic fracturing;
  • high temperature of the extracted liquid (hard-to-recover reserves, geothermal waters).

Design Features
Unlike asynchronous motors, brushless motors use rare-earth permanent magnets on the rotor and an electronic stator winding commutation system (valve) to generate torque. Control is provided by a variable-frequency drive, allowing for flexible adjustment of rotation speed and useful power. This solution eliminates magnetization losses typical of asynchronous machines (approximately 13% of the energy consumed is wasted as heat).
The main components are a stator with a three-phase winding, a permanent magnet rotor, a head, and a base. The stator is assembled from sheets of electrical steel with a heat-resistant coating, and the winding is made of heat-resistant wire in a star configuration. The rotor rotates on plain bearings.

Wide speed range
All Novomet valve motors are equipped with universal frequency-controlled control units, enabling operation over a wide speed range with consistently high efficiency. Customers can choose from high-speed (3000–6000 rpm) and low-speed (100–1500 rpm) versions—the latter are ideal for positive displacement pumps in wells with viscous fluids or low flow rates.

Advantages over asynchronous

  • Energy savings of up to 15% (up to 30% when paired with energy-efficient pumps).
  • Stable shaft torque regardless of speed.
  • Less heating and increased equipment life.
  • The specific power per section is twice as high; in many cases, sectional design is not required.

Standard sizes and areas of application
Valve motors are available in diameters ranging from 55 to 188 mm. The most compact models are ideal for compact ESP units and the mobile ColibriESP system (installed on a load-carrying cable inside the tubing). They are also popular in horizontal wells and wells with complex profiles. The general application area covers standard and complex wells, a wide range of flow rates and pressures, progressive cavity and positive displacement pump installations, and geothermal water lifting equipment.
