MagLink Short Hop is a magnetic-based short hop communication system designed to transmit critical data from Rotary Steerable Systems (RSS) to the MWD tool. It eliminates the need for a gap sub in the bottom-hole assembly. The system enables reliable wireless transfer of RSS drilling parameters to surface via the MWD telemetry. It simplifies BHA design and reduces potential failure points. The technology is compatible with Halliburton iCruise RSS and supports integration with Erdos Miller MicroPulse MWD systems. Operators benefit from faster drilling and improved overall reliability in directional programs.
Overview:
MagLink Short Hop uses magnetic field communication instead of electromagnetic or wired methods. It requires no gap sub, resulting in a stronger and more reliable BHA configuration. Current communication range is approximately 20 ft, with a development target of 60 ft. Temperature rating is 150°C (175°C version in development). The system is fully probe-based and supports data rates of 5–10 bps. It is unaffected by mud properties or formation resistivity, unlike some EM short hop systems. The tool integrates seamlessly with MicroPulse MWD directional modules to deliver real-time RSS data (inclination, azimuth, toolface, etc.) to surface.
