Shaft furnaces are designed as round, square, or rectangular shafts, open at the top and covered by lids. Heaters in shaft furnaces are typically mounted on the side walls. Shaft furnaces are less versatile than chamber furnaces, but in some cases, they offer significant advantages. Loading and unloading heavy parts can be accomplished using a standard shop crane, hoist, or pulley. Furnaces take up less space, as they are typically buried underground for easier maintenance. They are easier to seal, and lids offer less heat loss than chamber furnace doors.
